What I get asked most about marketing with social media is simply what do I do? Most people aren’t sure where to start. They have friends and followers and now they want to start using this platform to market their business or service. My 7 year old niece was wearing a shirt that pretty much summed up the basics of Social Media: “Reading, Writing, Socializing”. Now while I’m sure that the makers of this shirt weren’t referencing social media, they sure did nail it! So let’s begin with the basics:

READING: Make sure you are paying attention to what people post in their statuses, tweets, blogs, updates, etc;. Read what your customers are saying. It’s equally as important to listen as it is to share. Read what leaders in your industry are talking about. And certainly, read up on your competition.

WRITING: Make sure what you share is valuable and interesting. It should be valuable to your target audience, existing and potential customers. People will pay for what they value. If you are seen as an authority in your field and your followers value your content, they are most likely to purchase your product or service.

SOCIALIZING. Don’t forget the flip side of social media. While you are sharing your brand message and expertise, don’t forget to socialize! Start a conversation. Comment on a post. Retweet interesting content. Share great information that your friends post on facebook. Thank people who share your content, tweets and updates. Take the time during your designated social media time to engage with your followers and friends. It’s SOCIAL media, be social. You’ll be surprised and delighted at how powerful it is and the valuable connections you’ll make.

    Great tips, Sara! This is exactly how you “listen” to your audience…”Read what your customers are saying. It’s equally as important to listen as it is to share.” You can find out what they are talking about, what their needs are and viola, then you give it to them :-)
